Freelance editorial services

The service you need will depend on what your text is and what stage it is at but could include:

  • checking for errors in spelling, punctuation and grammar
  • making sure your message is clear and unambiguous
  • checking that your text is complete and in a logical order
  • checking facts and figures
  • rewriting your text in plain, jargon-free English
  • applying consistent styles and formats to your text
  • checking the layout of your text before it is printed

Proofreading

Checking the final version of your text for minor mistakes and inconsistencies and for correct layout. People often use the term ‘proofreading’ to mean any kind of editing but it really means checking your text once it has been formatted for printing or final output. This is not the time to make major changes or start rewriting. If your text needs such work then it should first be copy-edited.

Copy-editing

Working with you on your draft text to get it ready for publication. This could include correcting errors, suggesting changes to improve readability, rewriting, checking facts, checking your illustrations, tables and figures, checking references and notes, and marking up your text for layout.

Styling

Making sure your text uses consistent spellings, formats and punctuation and that your layout decisions are marked up for typesetting. For example, deciding to spell words using the –ize or –ise ending, whether to use full stops in abbreviations, marking headings and subheadings, use of bold, italics, etc.

Rewriting

Changing your text for a particular purpose, for example rewriting it for different readers, condensing a long text, replacing jargon or technical language with plain English. This service is also important for non-native English speakers who know what they want to write but who need help expressing it properly in English.

Page layout

Creating a clear and consistent design and layout for your text, or applying your own design ideas or house style.

Web editing

Checking that the content and functionality of your draft or existing text works well for online rather than print use, as well as making sure that it is well written.

How it works

I can work on paper or computer files.

Paper – I will use the current British Standard correction symbols (and will explain these if you are not familiar with them).

File – I will agree the best way of working with you. For example, I can use Word's track changes facility so that you can accept or reject my suggestions. Or I can mark up a PDF copy of your text.
